Q. I really don't like the look of my bare legs - spider veins, etc - but no one wears pantyhose anymore. How can I feel good about myself in a skirt?
A. The most important thing is to be comfortable with what you are wearing. While the traditional flesh-colored panty hose of the past are no longer a fashion staple, thankfully there are other options. With fall in the air, tights are comfy, modern & a great cover up. They come in many colors, and we prefer those that are not so thick as to add bulk. Darker colors are most slimming. This year, patterned hose are everywhere. The sexy black varieties are best left for evening wear, but textured styles in lighter shades can work for daytime. Many skirt styles going forward are long & full, which also makes it easier to go bare-legged. Boots are everywhere this season - including knee & over the knee, which eliminate the need for leg coverings. And if you feel you absolutely must wear sheer stockings, remember that style icon Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, likes to wear hosiery. Whatever you choose, wear with confidence & you will be smashing!
Q. I bought some wider leg black pants for fall, and plan to wear them with everything. They are kind of long - is it ok to wear flats?
A. Keeping in mind that your alterations person is your best friend : the general rule is wide leg pants should be worn with heels, flats are best when you can see a bit of ankle with your slim pants. It's best to take the shoes you will be wearing with you to have pants hemmed. This is a minor, relatively inexpensive alteration and can make-or-break an outfit.
