As we go through our list of clothing that every well-dressed woman must have in her closet, a great pair of black slacks is probably at the top. Black pants that go with just about everything, can be worn just about everywhere, and make you look taller, slimmer and put-together. Any questions? I didn't think so. However, finding the great pair of black pants - now there's the rub.
We aren't talking about black leggings ( another obvious must-have), jeans, or cropped pants. These are traditional trousers, in a poly or wool gab fabric. They have fuller legs and will be worn with a heel - kitten or stiletto, but a heel. They can easily take you from work to dinner. They definitely have a zipper - on the side can give you a smoother fit and decrease that bulky front bulge. Front zip can work as well, it might be just a matter of preference. They have a crisp front crease. I personally stay away from those with belt loops as they can bunch up and blouses tucked in with belted pants aren't that popular anyway. There are many different brands in all price ranges available (see our examples), but the most important thing to remember - get them altered! It is rare to find trousers that fit perfectly, especially in the length. A good alterations person is right up there with your hairdresser and nail tech. In other words, you can't live without them. Make sure to take the shoes you will wear with your pants to your alterations appointment. Face it, you can't wear your same nice black pants with boots, flats and heels. This is why many of us have different pairs to work with different heels. Since a good pair of slacks can last a few seasons, it might be a good idea to add a different style each year so you have a variety to choose from. Wear them with sweaters, jackets, blouses, beaded evening tops, blazers....well, you get the idea. Go buy your great new black slacks, have them altered to fit perfectly, and check that one off the list!
