Since 1873, when Levi Strauss fashioned the first pair of jeans, we have had a love affair with denim. Once the sturdy uniform of workmen, jeans, or dungarees, eventually became a fashion statement like no other. Many of us can remember our first pair of hip-hugger bellbottoms, and the craze that later spawned designer jeans with names like Calvin Klein and Gloria Vanderbilt. Soon the whole country was going western and two-stepping in their favorite boot cut jeans. Today, countless styles, colors and cuts are made from the sturdy and oh-so-wearable fabric. Boyfriend, colored, cropped, skinny, flared, leggings, jeggings, cuffed, pleated, low-rise, studded…how many do you own? This fall, add a denim shirt – or two- to your basic wardrobe. There are lots of great selections in stores right now. Instead of a matchy-matchy dark-blue-on-dark-blue ensemble, pair your denim top with your white or khaki jeans, or a light blue chambray shirt with your dark wash jeans. Try a soft denim blouse with a tweed or leather skirt and tights or boots for fall. A tailored jean shirt looks great with print pants or can be worn open as a jacket over a tank top. A longer jean top can be belted, or worn with leggings. Dress it up with a sweater or cute vest and add pearls or rhinestones and lots of bangle bracelets. Silver jewelry sparkles with denim, but gold works well, and chunky, funky beads can add color and style. Blue denim is so versatile, basically goes with anything, and gets softer and more wearable with each washing.
